MED#1 System requirements:
---------------------------
MS-DOS 2.0 (or greater)
640k of memory (* required)
Monochrome (or color) monitor
(1) 5 1/4" floppy disk drive (for loading of software)
(1) hard disk drive (for program and data files)
(1) printer (any dot matrix)
NO SPECIAL FORMS ARE REQUIRED. ALL REPORTS WILL BE
PRINTED ON 8 1/2" X 11" STANDARD STOCK PAPER.
(Note - MED#1 is a single user system and is not qualified for
multi-user, or network, usage.)
Files contained on your distribution disks:
-------------------------------------------
disk #1 README.1ST = Basic instructions
MED10001.OVL = Program (part 2 of 4)
MED10002.OVL = Program (part 3 of 4)
MED10003.OVL = Program (part 4 of 4)
MANUAL.SW4 = User manual (part 4 of 4)
disk #2 MED1.EXE = Program (part 1 of 4)
disk #3 MANUAL.BAT = Routine to print user manual
MED_UPDT.EXE = Routine needed to update files
from versions 1.03,1.04, and 1.05
MANUAL.SW1 = User manual (part 1 of 4)
MANUAL.SW2 = User manual (part 2 of 4)
MANUAL.SW3 = User manual (part 3 of 4)
Steps to follow for primary system installation:
------------------------------------------------
1. Make a backup of the MED#1 distribution disks and store
the originals in a save place. Use the newly created
backup disks for all following installation instructions.
2. Check to insure that you have a 'CONFIG.SYS' file in your
root directory with the following MINIMUM values:
FILES = 20
BUFFERS = 8
If you do not have a 'CONFIG.SYS' file, or it does not
contain these minimum values, consult your DOS manual on
how to create/modify your 'CONFIG.SYS' file.
(Note - MED#1 will not operate properly, and may crash, if
your 'CONFIG.SYS' file does not exist with these values.
If you needed to create, or modify, your 'CONFIG.SYS' file
be sure that you reboot your system before you continue.
Your system only reads the values contained in your
'CONFIG.SYS' file at initial system boot.)
3. From your root directory create a sub-directory that will
contain your MED#1 program and data files. The following
DOS command will create a sub-directory called "MED1".
C>MD\MED1 <return>
4. Once you have created the sub-directory, select the new
sub-directory by entering:
C>CD\MED1 <return>
5. Insert MED#1 distribution disk #1 into drive A. Copy the
contents of drive A into the newly created MED1 sub-
directory by entering the following DOS command:
C>COPY A:*.* <return>
Remove disk from drive A upon completion.
Repeat this process for disk #2 (and disk #3 if
provided).
6. Print your user manual and read before going any
further (user manual will be found only on disk #3):
a: turn on your printer
b: enter C>MANUAL <return>
------------------------------------------
Steps to follow for installation of upgrades and new versions:
--------------------------------------------------------------
1. Make a backup of the MED#1 distribution disks and store
the originals in a save place. Use the newly created
backup disks for all following installation instructions.
2. Backup your current data files. It is possible that
new versions of MED#1 will require modification of
your current data files. This file modification (if
needed) will be performed for you upon your initial
loading of the new MED#1 program. To provide you a
safe point of recovery in case of any unexpected
problems you should always make a backup of your
current data files prior executing any new version of
MED#1.
3. Select your MED#1 sub-directory by entering:
C>CD\MED1 <return>
4. Insert MED#1 distribution disk #1 into drive A. Copy the
contents of drive A into the newly created MED1 sub-
directory by entering the following DOS command:
C>COPY A:*.* <return>
Remove disk from drive A upon completion.
Repeat this process for disk #2 (and disk #3 if
provided).
5. Load MED#1 by entering:
C>MED1 <return>
Upon initial load of MED#1 any files needing to be
modified will automatically be upgraded by MED#1.
------------------------------------------
* Note: If you are currently a user of Version 1.03, 1.04, or
1.05 upon installation of Version 1.06 you will be requested to
to run MED_UPDT.EXE. This program will update your old files to the
new formats required by version 1.06.
ALL COPIES OF MED#1 WILL INITIALLY LOAD AS 'UNREGISTERED' HAVING A 100
PATIENT LIMIT. THIS PATIENT LIMIT WILL BE REMOVED UPON THE ENTRY
OF A VALID 'USER REGISTRATION NUMBER' INTO YOUR PRACTICE DATA. THIS
'USER REGISTRATION NUMBER' IS UNIQUE TO EACH USER AND IS PROVIDED TO
THE USER UPON RECEIPT OF A FULLY PAID AND PROPERLY FILLED OUT
REGISTRATION FORM. WHEN YOU SEND IN THIS FORM CHECK TO INSURE THAT
YOUR PRACTICE NAME IS ENTERED EXACTLY AS YOU WISH IT TO BE - ANY
CHANGES IN ENTERING YOUR PRACTICE NAME WILL INVALIDATE YOUR UNIQUE
REGISTRATION NUMBER.
REGISTERED USERS WILL RECEIVE THE FOLLOWING BENEFITS:
>FREE BUG REPLACEMENT DISKS (These free replacement disks
will be for any bug that results in either an abnormal
program termination, or that results in loss of data
integrity. You will be notified of program problems
that do not cause abnormal program termination or loss
of data integrity. You will be able to purchase
corrections for these problems for a modest shipping and
handling fee.);
>PRINTED USER MANUAL;
>CURRENT VERSION OF MED#1;
>LOW COST PRODUCT UPGRADES;
>SPECIAL PRICES ON NEW PRODUCTS FROM MEDshare.

*** COMMON PROBLEMS AND THEIR SOLUTION ***
******************************************
1. INSUFFICIENT MEMORY: MED#1 operates totally within the 640 K
limits of your system. This area is also used by your operating
system and other programs you may have been using. To see if you
have sufficient memory to load MED#1 run the DOS 'CHKDSK'
routine. You should have in excess of 512 K free memory. Next,
after you have loaded MED#1 press the 'F10' key when you are at
the DATE PROMPT on the MED#1 sign-n screen. You should have
available free memory of 40 K. (NOTE: MED#1 REQUIRES UP TO AN
ADDITIONAL 40 K OF MEMORY FOR SEVERAL OF ITS FEATURES TO RUN. IF
YOU DO NOT HAVE THIS 40 K OF FREE MEMORY CHECK YOUR 'CONFIG.SYS'
AND 'AUTOEXEC.BAT' FILES TO SEE WHAT OTHER PROGRAMS YOU ARE
USING. THE BEST TEST IS TO REMOVE ALL BUT THE 'FILES' AND
'BUFFER' COMMANDS FROM THESE FILES, REBOOT, LOAD MED#1, AND SEE
HOW MUCH FREE MEMORY IS AVAILABLE. THEN ADD BACK IN THE FEATURES
YOU WANT UNTIL YOU LOSE THE 40 K REQUIREMENT.)
2. ERROR MESSAGES ENDING WITH A '(2)': This error is a result of
MED#1 not being able to locate its data files. This error is
normally a result of MED#1 being installed on one system and then
copied to another system and to a different disk drive
designation. To correct this problem just delete the
'MEDMVBLS.MEM' file then re-load MED#1. You will be taken into
the system initialization cycle and asked to identify the disk
your data files are to reside on. After you have entered the disk
drive reference MED#1 will attempt to build your data files. If
it finds that the data file is currently in existence you will be
provided the opportunity to either save it or build a new one.
3. ERROR MESSAGES ENDING WITH A '(4)': This error is a result of
MED#1 not being able to open a file due to limits controlled by
your DOS system. This is corrected by correcting your
'CONFIG.SYS' file to have the minimum 'FILES' and 'BUFFERS'
commands as required for system setup. After you have corrected
your 'CONFIG.SYS' file reboot your system - THIS IS THE ONLY TIME
THAT THESE PARAMETERS ARE READ.

NEW FEATURES
************************
These features have been incorporated into MED#1 Version 1.06
after the composition of the SHAREWARE USER MANUAL that is
contained on disk #3.
PRACTICE INFORMATION SCREEN: You now have the ability to request
your Accounts Receivables to be maintained in either: DATE ORDER
- all transactions are maintained in date order with receipts and
adjustments applied to the oldest balance, or INVOICE ORDER - all
transactions are maintained in invoice number groups with
receipts and adjustments applied to specific invoicing. You
select the mode of operation in this screen and also establish
your first invoice number.
TRANSACTION POSTING: Transaction posting sub-menu now provides
you the 'LEDGER DISPLAY' function. With this feature you can now
do a ledger display for a patient/account without leaving the
posting function.
Invoice numbers are now maintained for you by MED#1. You can
override the number presented to you if you wish (YOU SHOULD TRY
TO POST RECEIPTS AND ADJUSTMENTS TO SPECIFIC INVOICES). The last
highest number you enter will be remembered by MED#1 and advanced
and returned to you for the next invoice you want to post.
Charge codes - If you enter an eight position code (CPT
code with modifier) and it is not in the CPT code table MED#1
will remove the modifier and search for the primary CPT
code. You do not need to setup CPT codes with modifiers
before you use them. Receipts and Adjustments must have the exact
corresponding code in the table.
HCFA - 1500 FORM: 1) MED#1 now print the doctors ID number in
column 24.H. 2) For multi-page HCFA-1500 forms totals are now
only printed on the last page.
INSURANCE FORMS (PLAIN PAPER): MED#1 now prints as many CPT
charges on a page as there is space for (prior release had a
limit of six CPT codes per page).
RECALL LETTERS: 1) You can now set the top and bottom margin for
letter printing, 2) the patient 'Salutation' is now printed in
the heading of the letter.
A/R AGING REPORT:
1) New totals printed for only the accounts listed, 2) Now
report totals are for the entire A/R on file and not just the
listed accounts.
2) Aging is controlled by the mode of processing you are using.
If you are using the DATE mode receipts and negative adjustments
are applied to the oldest open transaction. If you are using the
INVOICE mode receipts and adjustments are applied to specific
invoices and that invoice balance is aged.
STATEMENTS: Statement formats are now controlled by the mode of
processing you are using: If you are using the DATE mode you will
have a 'BALANCE FORWARD' total and a display of all transactions
posted after your last statement date. If you are using the
INVOICE mode you will not have a 'balance forward' but you will
have ALL OPEN invoices printed.
GENERAL LEDGER JOURNAL: This report now has a trailing report for
all deleted transactions for the selected time period. This
report is generated to support your audit trail. Remember no
transactions are physically removed from your system until you do
a PURGE OF OLD INVOICING.
SUPER BILL PRINT: 1) Transactions are printed showing true
amount, 2) Totals are now printed for: Charges, Adjustments,
Discounts, Tax, Receipts, and Net Due, 3) Option to print aged
patient/account balance, 4) option to print insurance assignment
message.
INSURANCE BATCH PRINT: Display of pending forms to be printed now
has the ability to remove specific requests from the print que.
PATIENT RECAPS: New feature to display/delete pending requests.
UTILITIES - APPLICATION SUPPORT:
PURGE OLD INVOICING: This is the only way that deleted
transactions are physically removed from your data files and the
space they occupied returned to you for new transactions. YOU ARE
NOW REQUIRED TO ENTER A 'PASSWORD' BEFORE YOU CAN EXECUTE THIS
FUNCTION. ONLY REGISTERED USERS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH KNOWLEDGE
OF THIS PASSWORD.
UTILITIES - SYSTEM SUPPORT:
MODIFY DATE FORMAT (new): With this function you can select the
international date format you wish to use for all displays,
reports, and data input. Your data files are not affected - only
how the date is accepted and displayed.
UPDATE SYSTEM DEFAULT VALUES (new): With this function you can
change the values of selected system defaults. These default
fields are: Transaction posting - 'Place' and 'Type' of service
codes. Super Bill - Message printed at bottom of super bill used
to accept insurance assignment.
Other improvements have been made to increase efficiency and
reduce program size.
(NOTE: MED#1 is always being improved. These improvements may or
may not result in a change in the version number of the MED#1
program. MEDshare reserves the right to make these changes
without notification to existing users. When a major improvement
has been made all users will be notified. The charge for these
improvements will be dependent upon the features provided and in
most cases will be under $100.00. If an improvement requires a
file modification you will be provided a program that will
perform this modification for you.)
